Chinese Courses

We have a diverse and balanced curriculum of courses in cultural studies, thought systems, literary masterpieces, and cinema. Those courses will equip students with knowledge of both ancient and modern China, which they will find very useful whether they wish to communicate with people on the other side of the globe or pursue a career path that is related to this country that boasts one of the longest cultural histories in the world.

All our language classes are taught by full-time instructors who specialize in pedagogy and language studies. Pitt Chinese students achieve intermediate-level proficiency by ACTFL standard around their third semester of learning and many students achieve advanced-level proficiency in their third-year classes. Many scholarship opportunities (FLAS, Chinese nationality room scholarships, etc.) are available to Chinese students. Cultural immersion and using language for hands-on activities (e.g. making Chinese dishes based on recipes) are prominent parts of our curriculum. Contact Professor Yi Xu if you have inquiries or want to request a placement test.

Note: If you already have a background in the Chinese language and need to be placed in one of the levels, please contact Yi Xu.

For the most current course requirements, please refer to the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Studies Department's Majors, Minors, and Certificates page to view all available Major Sheets.
